HARDWARE
Apple's 400-MHz G3 laptop weighs only 6 pounds and contains everything the new economy wage slave needs to get work done far afield. And with its vaunted five-hour battery life (closer to four, in reality) you can do a remarkable amount of work.
Although it's not as compact or as light as the dearly departed PowerBook 2400, the new G3 isn't intended to fill the subnotebook niche. Instead, the G3 400 plays to the demanding professional. At nearly the same price as the G3 300 (and 1.5 pounds lighter), the latest PowerBook delivers more speed and more ways to connect.
Built-in 10/100 Ethernet, a 56K modem, a Type II CardBus slot, and two USB ports make it as flexible as any other mobile laptop on the market. The DVD drive, with an onboard MPEG decoder and expandable memory, is more evidence that much thought went into perfecting this curvy gray slate.
The only trouble with this little workhorse is that it won't provide any equipment-related excuses for reading, dreaming, or slacking on the road.
