No one buys your bullshit, AxMi-24.

You mean FBI trolls on ars are downvoting me? Yea well that is not surprising, that's what you get paid for after all. But there are a few independently thinking people and they deserve to see something other than the Russians did everything bad in history of man kind bullshit spread by US propaganda machinery.

I wish I got paid for this, twatwaffle. My account here is connected to my real life persona, so that's some pretty weak bullshit, you propagandist.

I understand the motivation of this, but what do they actually hope to achieve by hacking the Olympics? Just to make them look bad?

Well, according to the article: "Compromising routers could have allowed the attackers to re-route network traffic, allowing surveillance of the traffic or "man in the middle" attacks—including the injection of malware into network traffic."

MitM could gather some useful data from attendees (incl. some high-level people from various governments) and spread malware. That's a pretty good outcome for a hack, if that actually occurred.

And then there's revenge for how the IOC treated Russia, which is its own reward...

Pretty sure the revenge factor is all that's needed. Russia is royally pissed at being banned for their cheating - an action that should have occurred long ago - and are certainly petty enough to do this just out of spite.

We're talking about a country that poisoned an opponent using polonium - which is only produced by Russia, China, and the US - just to make sure everybody knew they were responsible for it.

I'd guess they didn't go to much trouble hiding their tracks. They view exposure of their abilities like this as part of their success.
Or the WADA hacks mentioned at the tail end of the article. Pretty clear that was partially to attack the group whose doping testing flagged the Russians. And I also read that the hacked WADA data, when the Russian hackers released it, was also salted with false data with the intent of making innocent athletes from other countries look bad. Which calls into question even more strongly the veracity of the DNC documents they hacked and leaked, and whether they were also sprinkled with fabricated make-Russopublicans'-opponents-look-bad things.

While I think it's credible to think the Russians would have done that with the DNC documents, if that had been the case I would have expected the DNC to have said so. They didn't, so it probably wasn't the case.

Earliest I can find is October of 2016 is when they at least seem to have started doing wide spread tampering of the data they are releasing https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrew ... fe963252ff

That doesn't mean they didn't do it with DNC data, but it at least doesn't appear like they did (and as you mentioned, the DNC or people who's emails were released probably would have said something).

Prior it looks like Russia was mostly doing the stir conspiracy theory stuff on the sidelines rather than trying to invent stuff and salt it in to actual stolen data.

Sorry, but, this sounds more like CIA hacking. All the other news outlets are saying "Russian Hacking trying to frame NK" but, aren't those two allies or something? Why would Russia frame North Korea, and not, say, America, or Japan, or almost anyone else?

Meh, it won't matter in the end, they will never figure out who actually did it, they will all just use it to promote more aggressive stances

Uh, no, Russia and NK are not even close to being allies.

Quiet, please! You don't want the U.S. knows about this.

You don't think the North Korea built those rockets? They certainly didn't come from China.

Russia has 150 million inhabitants.
It is surrounded by NATO (1 billion people +) and China (1 billion people +).
So it really is no wonder they would buff up their cyber operations, it is really the only thing they can do to stay relevant in this world.

A better option would be for their government to lead them like a responsible member of the world community. Russia has a deep and rich culture, great natural resources, talented people whose quickness to laugh belies their long suffering history—or maybe is founded on it, given humor’s role as a defense mechanism...

I think they deserve better, and have for a long time.

Yea they could just do what west does and invade countries for resources and if possible get their own continent to suck dry.

However I doubt that Russian public would agree to that kind of action unlike the western one that believes the bullshit about democratic bombs and people being happy to get murdered by western soldiers or their pet jihadists.

The Ukraine would like to have a word with you on that topic.

or Georgia, or Afghanistan...

You FBI people seriously need to do your work a bit better. Georgia started that war and that was admitted (very quietly of course) by both EU and NATO (after US and NATO pushing Georgia to attack). Both did cry that Russia beat Georgia but I wonder what US would have done if another country attacked their troops. I'm betting it would not send a sternly worded note.

Afghanistan is being invaded by US and it's NATO pets so not sure what exactly Russia has with it. Back in the day Soviet Union got invited by the then government (a bit different compared to an invasion) and US created taliban and other jihadists to screw with Soviet Union.

So both cases were fucked up by US and NATO. Maybe you FBI trolls should farm out your trolling to someone more competent? Someone who is at least able to pick examples that are not obviously bad for your PR push.

You mean when Georgia intercepted arms shipments from Russia into South Ossetia that were disguised as a peacekeeper vehicles? (Why does that ring a bell? Oh yeah, those Russian army trucks repainted white to be sent into Ukraine for "humanitarian aid".)

Afghanistan- "invited". Lol, right. The Afghan communists, under Soviet influence, took power in a bloody coup, killing President Daoud and his family, after Dauoud refused to let Brezhnef give him orders. Not long after, when the Soviets felt Hafizullah Amin (who deposed the pro-Soviet Nur Muhammad Taraki) was acting too much like a non-puppet, the Soviet forces stormed Tajbeg Palace in Operation Storm-333 and assassinated him (killing many guards in the process), and installed Soviet puppet Babrak Karmal.

Invitation by a puppet regime doesn't amount to much.

Russian or Stupid.

The game that will not end.

The answer could always simply be "Yes", however...
Patience, young padawan...

But I want to grow up into a whiny, self-absorbed "rebel" who may or may not listen to Nikelback! At least I'll get a moderately cute wife*.

*: Only unlike Anakin, I won't be a jealous little dick, and will do my best to listen to her concerns and take them seriously. Of course, then I couldn't have a laser-swordfight with Obi-Wan "only the Sith deal in absolutes!" Kenobi over lava, because the people who made Star Wars learned everything they know about fluid dynamics, specifically invection, from Super Mario Bros.
