India’s T20 World Cup win is still being celebrated around the world by Indian Cricket team’s fans, an exciting news regarding the possibility of BCCI (Board of Control over Cricket in India) secretory Jay Shah being appointed as the new ICC (International Cricket Council) Chairman started surfacing with the election scheduled in November. The selection process for the Chairman of the prestigious organization includes the election that decides the winner by a simple majority. After meeting at Birmingham in 2022, the current Chairman, Greg Barclay was re-elected as the chairman with the term of the Chair for two years between December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2024. The ICC currently has a total of 108 member nations: 12 full members who play Test matches and 96 Associated members who play qualification rounds for major ICC Tournaments and also vote for the chairman post. ICC’s current finance and commercial affairs head Jay Shah is seen as a favourite for the post, especially after Shah's intentions to change the way ICC functions following the controversy around organizing the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. According to a report in Cricbuzz, Jay Shah is, however, undecided on contesting in the election for the next ICC chairman and will have three months’ time to give his final decision. Interestingly it is rumored that Jay Shah played a vital role in the re-appointment of Greg Barclay back in 2022. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Wishes ‘One and Only MS Dhoni’ on His 43rd Birthday.
The ICC annual conference is scheduled to be held in Colombo later in July, and a timeline for the chairman’s election is likely to be formalized during the conference. Even if Jay Shah contests and wins the election, he can hold his position in BCCI as Greg Barclay held the ICC Chairman and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chairman post in 2015. Similarly, former BCCI President Shashank Manohar was also ICC Chairman in 2016.
