Perry High School shooting confirmed by police. Ambulances sent; briefing set for 10 a.m.
    Allison Ullmann Philip Joens
    Des Moines Register

Heavy police and medical presence was at Perry High School early Thursday morning, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Des Moines in Dallas County, after reports of a shooting that could include multiple victims.

Police on scene have confirmed to the Des Moines Register there was a shooter at the school but believe it is no longer an active situation. Streets for several blocks are barricaded, dozens of law enforcement from across central Iowa were on scene and a medical helicopter was seen landing at the school at about 8:30 a.m.

Parents started arriving at about 8:50 a.m. to find their students.

City spokesperson Chris Cohea said the elementary school nearby was locked down and all students there were being kept in their rooms.

Perry has a population of about 8,000 residents. The high school is part of the 1,785-student Perry Community School District. Thursday was the first day back in school for students following the holiday break.

    Perry canceled classes Friday
The Perry Community School District has canceled classes Friday, according to its districtwide communication system. Counseling services will be available at the Perry Public Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Dad reports son injured in shooting, son saw principal get shot
Kevin Shelley said his son, Zander, 15, was grazed by two bullets while in a school hallway. He left the school at about 8:30 a.m. and went to his nearby home, Kevin Shelley said. He described his son's injuries as minor.

Kevin Shelley said his son said he saw the principal get shot.

"My son was inside, said he heard gunshots and immediately started running," Kevin Shelley said. "They got into a classroom with a teacher that kept them hidden and safe."

Zander broke his glasses as he was running away, his father said.

Perry teachers told to go home
All staff have been released to go home, according to a message sent on the districtwide communications system. "Do not return to the building. More information will be available later," the text said.

News conference scheduled for 10 a.m.
Police expect to give an update to the media at about 10 a.m. in Perry.

Dispatcher tells police multiple injured, scanner traffic says

The first call from dispatch was at about 7:37 a.m., according to a recording from the police scanner. Dispatchers said they had access to school cameras and reported seeing something in the west hallway.

A dispatcher advised first responders of "reports of multiple subjects injured at this time."

An unknown first responder advised dispatchers that he encountered a "male subject down in the hallway — appears to be self-inflicted" and that he was "showing other victims." He later advised that he was outside of Room 308 and "subject that's down is deceased."

Call for two medical helicopters went out at 7:46 a.m.

Students evacuated from Perry High School
High school students were evacuated to Perry Lutheran Homes and the Iowa National Guard Armory. Teacher Holly Killmer said the nursing home was so kind and had tissues and snacks out for the students.

Parents told to meet students at elementary school
Police on scene are telling parents to pick up their students at the elementary school, about a mile west of the high school.

Parent reports trying to get their student
Erica Jolliff said that her daughter, a ninth grader, reported getting rushed from the school grounds at 7:45 am. Distraught, Jolliff was still looking for her son Amir, a sixth grader, one hour later.

“I just want to know that he’s safe and OK,” Jolliff said. “They won’t tell me nothing.”

School board member 'praying' for those involved
When reached by phone, Perry School Board member Travis Landgrebe, who has a son in sixth grade, said he could not "confirm nor deny" any reports.

Landgrebe did confirm his son was home and unharmed.

I am "praying for all involved," Landgrebe told the Des Moines Register in a phone interview.

A "kid" that was tormented for years by bullies, who voiced that fact, and had no response from the school, whose parents knew that he had access to fire arms, made cryptic social media posts, fired 3 shots in total, 1 dead 5 wounded. 3 gun shot victims were found in total so giving that his fatal wound was self inflicted how could he also shoot 3 others with just 3 shots fired from a small caliber handgun since the shotgun was never fired?
Another article says 4 shots were initially fired followed by several more but uncounted, so which one is it? Here is an idea, stop reporting on any of this shit because all it does is give the next sick fuck more motivation to grasp at their 5 minutes of fame and start making mental health care available to everyone no matter their income level.

17-year-old kills sixth grader, wounds five others in Iowa school shooting, police say
    NICHOLAS RICCARDI and HANNAH FINGERHUT

PERRY, Iowa (AP) — A 17-year-old opened fire at a small-town Iowa high school before classes resumed on the first day after the winter break, killing a sixth-grader and wounding five others Thursday as students barricaded in offices, ducked into classrooms and fled in panic.

The suspect, a student at the school in Perry, died of what investigators believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound, an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation official said. Authorities said one of the five people wounded was an administrator, later identified by his alma mater as Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger.

Authorities identified the shooter as Dylan Butler, 17, and provided no information about a possible motive. Two friends and their mother who spoke with The Associated Press said Butler was a quiet person who had been bullied for years.

Perry has about 8,000 residents and is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines, on the edge of the state capital's metropolitan area. It is home to a large pork-processing plant and low-slung, single-story homes spread among trees now shorn of their leaves by winter. The high school and middle school are connected, sitting on the east edge of town.

Authorities said Butler had a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Mitch Mortvedt, the state investigation division's assistant director, said during a news conference that authorities also found a “pretty rudimentary” improvised explosive device and rendered it safe.

The suspect's motive is being investigated and authorities are looking into “a number of social media posts” he made around the time of the shooting, Mortvedt added.

A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said federal and state investigators are interviewing Butler’s friends and analyzing Butler’s social media profiles, including posts on TikTok and Reddit.

Shortly before Thursday’s shooting, Butler posted a photo on TikTok inside the bathroom of Perry High School, the official said. The photo was captioned “now we wait” and the song “Stray Bullet” by the German band KMFDM accompanied it. Investigators have also found other photos Butler posted posing with firearms, according to the official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

Sisters Yesenia Roeder and Khamya Hall, both 17, said alongside their mother, Alita, that Butler was bullied relentlessly since elementary school, but it escalated recently when his younger sister started getting picked on, too. His parents brought it up to the school, they said, and that was the “last straw” for Butler.

“He was hurting. He got tired. He got tired of the bullying. He got tired of the harassment," Yesenia Roeder Hall, 17, said. "Was it a smart idea to shoot up the school? No. God, no.”

Calls to Perry Community Schools' Superintendent Clark Wicks, as well as school board members, were unanswered Thursday, and an emailed request for comment was not immediately returned.

Perry High School senior Ava Augustus said she was awaiting a counselor in a school office when she heard three shots. Unable to flee through a small window, she and others barricaded the door and were ready to throw things if necessary.

“And then we hear ‘He’s down. You can go out,’” Augustus said through tears. ”And I run and you can just see glass everywhere, blood on the floor. I get to my car and they’re taking a girl out of the auditorium who had been shot in her leg.”

Three gunshot victims were being treated at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, a spokesperson said. Others were taken to a second hospital, a spokesperson for MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center confirmed.

Mortvedt said one person was in critical condition but the injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, and the others were stable.

Hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight prayer vigil Thursday evening at a park where hours earlier, students had been brought to reunite with their families after the shooting. Bundled up against freezing temperatures, they listened to pastors from many faiths and heard a message of hope in both English and Spanish.

A post on the high school's Facebook page said it would be closed Friday and counseling services would be available for students, faculty and others in the community.

“This senseless tragedy has shaken our entire state to its core,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said.

In Washington, President Joe Biden and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland were briefed on the shooting.

The shooting occurred ahead of Iowa's Jan. 15 first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses. GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy had a 9 a.m. campaign event scheduled in Perry about 1 1/2 miles (2 kilometers) from the school but canceled it to hold a prayer and intimate discussion with area residents.

Mass shootings across the U.S. have long brought calls for stricter gun laws from gun safety advocates, and Thursday's did within hours. But that idea has been a non-starter for many Republicans, particularly in rural, GOP-leaning states like Iowa.

As of July 2021, Iowa does not require a permit to purchase a handgun or carry a firearm in public, though it mandates a background check for anyone buying a handgun without a permit.

Ramaswamy said the shooting is a sign of a “psychological sickness” in the country. In Des Moines, GOP rival and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said gun violence "is more of a local and state issue" in an interview with the Des Moines Register and NBC News.

The high school is part of the 1,785-student Perry Community School District. Perry is more diverse than Iowa as a whole. Census figures show 31% of its residents are Hispanic, compared with less than 7% statewide. Those figures also show nearly 19% of the town’s residents were born outside the U.S.

Authorities said officers arrived within minutes after an active shooter was reported at 7:37 a.m. Thursday. Emergency vehicles surrounded the complex.

“Officers immediately attempted to locate the source of the threat and quickly found what appeared to be the shooter with a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Mortvedt said.

Rachael Kares, an 18-year-old senior, was wrapping up jazz band practice when she and her bandmates heard four gunshots, spaced apart.

“We all just jumped,” Kares said. “My band teacher looked at us and yelled, ‘Run!’ So we ran.”

Kares and many others scrambled out past the football field, as people yelled, “Get out! Get out!” She said she heard additional shots, but didn’t know how many. She was more concerned about getting home to her 3-year-old son.

Zander Shelley, 15, was in a hallway when he heard shots and dashed into a classroom, according to his father, Kevin Shelley. Zander was grazed twice and hid in the classroom before texting his father.

Kevin Shelley, who drives a garbage truck, told his boss he had to run. “It was the most scared I’ve been in my entire life,” he said.

He later posted a photo on Facebook of his son being treated at the Methodist Medical Center and said the boy was feeling fine.

He added: “I am still shaking and tho I dont show it I’m not OK.”

I cannot believe that instead of doing something about guns we become numb to mass shootings. And the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans us "protecting our children" as an excuse for all kinds of oppressive attacks and even our debt. But refuse to even acknowledge what guns are dong to our children. And its so much more than guns just being the number cause of death for children. We are also traumatizing entire generations. Just reading the reaction to the students in that school hearing gun shots is heartbreaking. We have a nation full of children who live in constant fear of getting shot at school. Which traumatizes them for the rest of their lives. And no one seems to give a shit about that.

      Nonsense.
The liberals would like nothing better than to get rid of all guns because guns are a threat to their attempts to take all power to themselves.
Our children (bet american hater threw up a bit in his mouth when he said that) are no more traumatized or afraid of being shot than we were afraid of being incinerated by a Russian nuke. It was a thing we couldn't do much about so we moved along, and made a game out of the duck and cover exercises.

What no one gives a shit about is the endless crisis spewing of the left.

Do not blame mental illness, I have been living with my own issues all of my life and have never once even thought of killing people. It is not the illness to blame, it is the fool that ignored it and the fact that help is not easily available to the masses. A gun is a tool the same as a shrink and a screwdriver no more no less.

Trump tells Iowans to ‘get over’ school shooting at campaign event
    Michael Sainato
Sat, January 6, 2024 at 8:13 AM MST·2 min read
    4.1k

Donald Trump told an audience at a campaign event on Friday in Iowa to “get over” a deadly shooting at a high school in the state a day earlier.

Related: Trump’s tale of business genius could meet sorry end in New York fraud trial

After offering sympathy and emotional support for the victims of the shooting in Perry, Iowa, and their families, Trump said at the event in Sioux Center: “It’s just horrible – so surprising to see it here. But we have to get over it. We have to move forward.”

Trump’s comments on the shooting that occurred about 36 hours earlier were the first he had made addressing the violence.

Friday’s remarks were not the first time in the last year that Trump has apparently tried to deflect from having a substantial conversation about gun violence in the US. During a speech in April 2023 to the National Rifle Association, Trump argued that the long history of deadly school shootings in the US is “not a gun problem”. He instead blamed the issue on Democrats, mental health issues, marijuana and the transgender community.

Trump’s recent comment on the Perry shooting was criticized by the Democratic Super Pac American Bridge.

“We knew Trump lacked empathy for others, but no one thought he could go this low and tell Iowans to simply ‘get over it’ as they grieve from a situation communities across the country know all too well,” the American Bridge presidential campaigns communication director, Brandon Weathersby, said in a statement on Trump’s comments. “This is beyond the pale, even for Trump.”

Trump has made several campaign stops in Iowa ahead of the Republican presidential primary caucuses on 15 January. He is seeking a second presidency despite facing 91 criminal charges for trying to subvert his defeat to Joe Biden in the 2020 election, illegally retaining government secrets after he left the Oval Office and illicit hush-money payments to the adult film actor Stormy Daniels, who has reported having a sexual encounter with Trump during an earlier time in his marriage to Melania Trump.

The former president has also grappled with civil litigation over his business practices and a rape allegation deemed “substantially true” by a judge.

Nonetheless, Trump dominates polling for the Republican presidential nomination this year.

The shooting in Perry killed one sixth grader and wounded seven others. Police identified the shooter as a 17-year-old student who attended high school at the targeted campus. The teen attacker died from a self-inflicted bullet wound, police said.

Police said they found an improvised explosive device during a search of the school while responding to the shooting.

Four of the wounded were students, two were faculty and one was the principal, who was reported to be in critical condition but – like the remaining victims – did not appear to be facing life-threatening injuries.

The shooting occurred shortly before classes started on the first day of school after the students’ holiday break.

So, there are approximately 650 mass shootings in 2022, and you somehow think that because 6 of them were identifying as trans that somehow all mass shooters were trans.

So what you're saying is that less than one percent of all shooters define how the rest of them are viewed. That's one hell of a leap of faith over that cliff.

There is no possible way this is even remotely true.

Why are you afraid of trans people? How do they possibly effect your life in any way?

TBA does not mean shit except that someone is looking for something to blame that they do not like, non-binary means neither one nor the other as in not female or male, and most cross dressers only do so because they like it. Hell most are straight but wanting a release, a way to express what they cannot express daily. You are condemning them for their lack of knowledge yet you continue it?

It is meaningless and a waste of time to try and debate unsourced meme. There are no names dates and places to research and see if its the truth.

And I will give you an example. Immediately after the Nashville shooting the police immediately jumped to the conclusion the shooter was transgender. But then never said it again because there is no evidence at all the shooter was transgender.

So more than likely the same applies to the others. There is nothing to back up the claim.

So, genius, we can note that defining how people are to be viewed based on a small minority of them is incorrect behavior? That people should be judged individually?
Is that what you are saying?

      Here's the problem...

If you are pro gun, you wont consider the possibility that removing guns could actually be a solution, because it's Americans RIGHT to own guns, and that RIGHT cannot be ignored.

If you are not pro gun, you're good looking, sensible, logical, understanding of the situation at hand.

Nah, just being silly. Anti-gun people aren't all good looking.

I am pro ownership for responsible people that follow laws, I am anti ownership for criminals, I own several firearms and have been well trained on their use for target shooting, cowboy action shooting, hunting, and self defense but I also understand that every gun is a tool. I have had conversations with right wingers that will tell you that even as liberal as I can be I am also very conservative, moreso on many subjects than even tRump. If you want to slow these types of shootings you need to start by addressing income inequality, poverty, the pervasive idea that hip hop culture should be acceptable, end the practice of celebrating people that go to prison and condemn them as nature intended, and fucking grow up with the bullshit that removing all guns will stop a single death.

Many mass shooters are not criminals until the day they go out and buy am assault weapon with an extended magazine and open fire on a group of innocent people. However, many of them do have a history of mental illness. Most also have some connection to far right ideology.

And in most mass shootings its fairly easy to tell if the mass shooter had an assault weapon and extended magazine just by the number of killed and wounded. It its any other kind of gun(s) the number of dead and wounded will be far less. Just like this latest mass shooting. One dead five wounded. Because the shooter hat a shotgun and handgun.

Although I'm a good looking, sensible, logical, and understanding of the situation, I don't believe that eliminating guns is the solution.....
Since the focus is on "School Shootings" since there's so much money "spent on Education" but the U.S. ranks so low in Education, spend the money on hardening the target.....
Put magnetometers at the main entrance, use bullet proof glass in all the windows and armed guards on all floors.....
If they're going to act like animals at school, treat them as such.....

In Australia we introduced gun control back in the 1990s after 2 terrible massacres. It took a government with balls to act and pass legislation to remove many guns from private citizens hands. Every time America has another massacre I’m just puzzled why you don’t act to stop this madness.

Be correct, it was 1996 and long guns were left unaffected by the new law, gun crimes do still happen there only as a nation they redefined what makes a crime a gun crime. Robbing someone at gun point is not a gun crime in Australia just because a gun was used though in the US it is a gun crime, the US counts it as such as long as a gun is involved while other nations require a separate conviction and charge for commission of a gun crime for it to even be counted which is rare as hell because it almost always gets thrown out. Now knowing that the trend in Aus was a dropping gun crime rate starting in 1955 when laws were changed the first time the 96 law has not changed much, just people losing their right to self defense.

One thing that always seems to get lost every time Australia's gun controls come up is they didn't ban all guns. They only banned semi automatic guns but especially assault weapons. And it worked to stop mass shootings.

Just like the ban on assault weapons and extended magazines the US once had reduced the number of mass shootings but especially reduced the number of those killed and wounded in mass shootings.

Well, Jon, as has been explained several times, we have this pesky thing called the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. And if you read it you find this amendment that talks about the right to bear arms, as in any numb nut can own a gun.
Now, the anti gun crowd has tried for years to limit who can have guns, and what kind of guns, and every time we get another mass shooting we see new laws intended to require proof of ............... something, or limiting the type of guns etc.
    With limited success.
    Because of that pesky Constitution.

And part of the problem with the gun control crowd is that every other amendment, every other right we have, is what's called "self evident". We don't have to prove that we "need" free speech when we publish something, and we don't have to apply for a license so we're protected from unreasonable search, and we don't pay a special fee to enjoy the rights that everyone else does. But the gun control bunch keeps trying to add something that would require showing that we "need" that right to bear arms, or that we need special permission from the gummit to own just any gun, or that we need to pay a special fee to exercise that right. The only changes that have worked deal with public safety, and then only when they make a lot more sense than "BAN ALL GUNS THAT GO BANG! BANG!

See, In America everything that makes us a country, has contributed to our success and longevity is based on that pesky Constitution. Now, an educated American understands just how important that constitution is. A non american usually doesn't, and takes the attitude, "well just change it". Which right away shows us they have zero clue about our constitution or laws. Because in most countries, some premier, or minister, or whoever can just whip out a pen and change things like that.

Not in America. So when you wonder why we don't "just fix it", it's because our constitution is by design hard to "just fix". The thing is a brilliant piece of work, written over 250 years ago, and still relevant and powerful and very effective today. Even though our more liberal citizens would like to just toss the whole thing and install one of theirs as dictator.
